Prioritizing Systems over Goals
Why daily systems beat New Year resolutions — Tyler on accountability, living below your means, and faith as foundation.
Every year following Christmas, we contemplate how to improve in the coming year. But writing down aspirations alone hasn’t proven sufficient for meaningful change. While objectives provide direction, the systems we establish — encompassing habits and daily routines — are what truly propel us forward.
As James Clear articulates, “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”
The Power of Systems: A Personal Story
Two years ago, I transitioned from mortgage lending to independent brokerage. Despite clear targets and mentors, I discovered that daily habits and accountability structures mattered far more than goal lists.
Three Key Lessons
1. Accountability Systems Navigate Opposition
Life presents constant challenges. I created an AI accountability system to text daily check-ins, helping me realign priorities in Faith, Family, Fitness, and Finances. Systems provide frameworks for endurance through difficulties.
2. Live Within Your Means — Joy Is the Journey
Financial success isn’t about earning more — it’s about spending less. True joy emerges from the “four foundational elements,” not material milestones. Service to others naturally encourages living below your means while building meaningful stewardship.
3. Faith as Foundation
Consistent spiritual practices — prayer, scripture study, temple attendance — strengthen all life areas. Morning routines combining prayer and exercise fortify both spirit and body. Bedtime traditions with family create lasting relationships.
Final Thoughts
Systems create the person you’re becoming, not just goal achievement. Change compounds daily across Faith, Family, Fitness, and Finances. This week, select one 2025 objective and build a daily system around it. Think eternally, not temporarily.
